Using the Franck-Hertz Experiment To Illustrate Quantization: Energy States of the Neon Atom by Electron Impact

چکیده
Laboratory exercises that illustrate quantum phenomena provide students with motivation for the study of quantum mechanics. That microscopic matter exists in quantized states can be demonstrated with modem versions of historic experiments: atomic line spectra (I), resonance potentials, and blackbody radiation. The resonance potentials of mercury were discovered by Franck and Hertz in 1914 (2). Their experiment consisted of bombarding atoms by electrons, and detecting the kinetic energy loss of the scattered electrons (3). Prior to the Franck-Hertz experiment, spectroscopic work bv Balmer and Rvdbere revealed that atoms emitted radiatibn a t discrete ekergiis. The Franck-Hertz experiment showed directly that auantized enerm levels in an atom are real, not jist optiEal artifacts. atom can be raised to excited states by inelastic collisions with electrons as well as lowered from excited states by emission of photons. The classic Franck-Hertz experiment is carried out with mercury (4-7). Here we present an experiment for the study of resonance potentials using neon.

The Franck-Hertz Experiment and the Ramsauer-Townsend Effect: Elastic and Inelastic Scattering of Electrons by Atoms
Franck and Hertz described the first observation of quantized excitation in 1914, one year after Bohr published his theory of the hydrogen atom with its concept of quantized energy states. They discovered that electrons moving through mercury vapor with an energy greater than or equal to a critical value near 4.9 eV can excite the 2536 Å line of the mercury spectrum. Electrons with less than th...

متن کاملQuantization of electromagnetic fields in the presence of a spherical semiconductor quantum dot and spontaneous decay of an excited atom doped in this nanostructure
In this paper we consider electromagnetic field quantization in the presence of a dispersive and absorbing semiconductor quantum dot. By using macroscopic approach and Green's function method, quantization of electromagnetic field is investigated. Interaction of a two-level atom , which is doped in a semiconductor quantum dot, with the quantized field is considered and its spontaneous emission ...
متن کاملTriple Photoionization of Lithium Up To 650 eV
The doubleand triple-photoionization process in which two (or three) electrons are simultaneously emitted from an atom is of fundamental importance for the understanding of electron correlation. The triple-to-single photoionization ratio is a convenient way to quantify this correlation and to investigate its photon energy dependence. Many experimental and theoretical investigations have dealt w...

In this paper, we study the effect of single Boron/Nitrogen impurityatom on electronic properties of a silicene nano flake. Our calculations are basedon density functional theory by using Gaussian package. Here, one Si atom insilicene nano flake substitutes with a Boron/Nitrogen atom. The results show thatsubstitution of one Si atom with single Boron/Nitrogen atom increases distanceof impurity ...
